Signs of September

Happy September everyone! I can’t believe it is finally here! This marks the beginning of my favorite months. From here until Christmas, everything seems to delight and entice, making for tons of fun! Fall has always been my favorite season, so I am excited for it to get started. It is still well in the 90s here, but that won’t stop me from celebrating what I am most excited for!

This mamajama hitting my desk. I’m only halfway through, but man is it great. I am savoring every page of it.

The return of the heat tools. No more carefree summer locks. Now that its fashion month, it’s time to tame the mane and get to serious business.

Cool Denver mornings and evenings, that rapidly turn in to hot hot hot days. Forces me to get creative with my wardrobe.

The steady transition of bright summer colors to cooler colors, and thicker layers. I love the way my fashion rack really emulates the changes in seasons.

Fabulous boots on Shoemint. These bad boys will soon be mine, been saving for a while 🙂

I used these inexpensive boxed dyes to do a reverse ombré on my hair. I love the results, but want to go darker on my whole head now. We will see what happens!

And of course the hallmark way to tell fall is here? Starbucks has their pumpkin spice lattes. I personally am not a fan, but I love what it means! Have a fabulous week friends, and get excited for fall! -T

Temperature Rising

With the temps where I live hitting the 100’s, I have plopped down on the couch in the air conditioning, and am blogging up a storm. One of my favorite things to do when it is so hot is dream of cooler fall days and do some online looking… Not shopping I promise, just looking and gathering ideas! Enter the Lust List. A list of all things that have caught my eye lately!

This oversized sweater-coat-jacket from Free People. Lush and warm, plus a beautiful alternative to a coat in the fall.

A beautifully lush bag made by the Cambridge Satchel Company, I have been swooning over one since I saw a gal with one at school.

I have yet to jump on the bootie train, but these are wonderful! They are a take on the Sam Edelman stud booties that I sadly missed out on, but at a better price point. I am keeping these on my radar!

A beautiful Burberry Trench Coat. Who does not one of these hanging in their closet? I am always in awe of this style of coat, and will happily be saving my pennies for the day when I can buy the real deal.

I love finding pieces that can transcend many seasons for many years. This cute eyelet dress from Target is super cute, and fits the shift dress category that I have been looking to fill. Out of this whole list, I think this one will be coming home with me super soon!

What pieces are you loving lately? Any must haves for heading into fall? -T

BaubleBar Goodies

After working my tail off the last week for the holiday and numerous other endeavors, I am so excited to be back in action and on a regular schedule. Thank Goodness. So back to all of my favorite things!

As a part of learning how to create my own style, I have learned part of the art of buying pieces. So I keep a list on my phone of pieces I want to invest in. Currently topping the list? A denim jacket. But that’s for another post. A couple maybe items are the currently popular emerald color, and statement necklaces. So when I got an offer email from BaubleBar for a complimentary statement necklace with a $15 purchase, I was sold.

I finally settled on some silver pave stud earrings, and an emerald statement necklace (similar here). I feel both of these pieces will fit with many of the items I already own, as well as them both working for every season. And while emerald is this years color of the year, it will always be timeless, and give a great pop of color.

The moral of the story is also to sign up for those email lists, even if you filter them to skip your inbox, you never know what awesome deal or sale will pop up!

June Favorites!

Writing about June favorites is so bittersweet. June is my favorite summer month, and I am sad it is over! I also had so many wonderful things I was looking forward to this month, and I want to go back and relive every sweet, fleeting moment. Unfortunately that is not possible, so I shall do the alternative! Let’s talk about what I loved this month!

Tv Show: Revenge. After resisting this show on Netflix for quite some time, I caved this past week, and have quickly become obsessed! Its thrilling with twists and turns, without taking it over the top. It hits all the right notes! Check it out if you haven’t yet.

Book: The Shopaholic Series by Sophie Kinsella. The I have read the first four books in this series on my Kindle, and have loved them! They are quick reads, but just fun entertainment. I have enjoyed following the same character for a while!

Activity: Swimming. As evident from my Instagram feed, I have been spending as much time by the pool as possible. Its so refreshing, and gives the day such a leisurely pace. Can’t wait to make it again soon on my next day off!

Clothing Item: H&M denim shorts. With a cute permanent cuff and just the right length, these shorts balance the difference between mom shorts and super short shorts. The perfect balance since I enjoy showing off the legs, but always want to keep it classy.

Accessory: Rainbow black leather Flip Flops. At $45, these flip flops were an investment piece for me. And boy have I never regretted paying that much for them. Once broken in, they have been the most comfortable shoes I own. And the leather makes them look 10 times classier than a plain pair of Old Navy Flip Flops (which only belong in a pool bag in my opinion). In the two years since buying them, I have easily worn them enough to bring the price well below 50 cents a wear.

Beauty/Bodycare: St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse. This month I attended a wedding, which was well before I got any sun in. This self tanner was my saving grace. When applied with a mit, the color looks amazingly natural, and not over done. I felt it gave a great glow, and had great lasting power. The price tag is a little steep, but I have found that it works like none other, and have already found it to be worth every penny.

Makeup: Clinique Superbalance Foundation. This favorite is slightly unfair. I’ve only been using this product for a week and a half, but I am already so smitten that it is at favorite status. With a great color, the perfect amount of coverage, and a formula that balances both oiliness and dry patches, this foundation is unparalleled. It has great staying power as well, even when I was working in a hot kitchen all day. That’s where it is at!

Lippie: LAQA & Co. Lil’ Lip. Creamy texture, great color payoff, and a build-able color make this lip product great. It goes on like a lip gloss stick, but sticks around like a long lasting lipstick, this gets the job done. And you can sheer it out or build it up quite well. I wore this out for date night, went to sleep, and still had a little left on my lips in the morning. Impressive! Read more about this product here.

Here’s hoping that July is just as fabulous as June! -T

Creating a Personal Style

Fashions fade, style is eternal. -Yves Saint-Laurent

For the longest time I believed that having great style meant I had to jam my feet into uncomfortable heels every day, and generally wear things what were beautiful, but never really suited me. I maintained this idea of “personal style” for a long while, and even still sometimes I go back to that original basic model I had. But in recent years, I have realized there is more to personal style than can sometimes meet the eye. I have always been a “jeans and t-shirt” kind of gal, and I thought you could never do that sort of outfit with style. Well friends, I am here to tell you that is not true!

If you love something enough, you find a way to make it your own, and still exude style.

We have all seen those pins on Pinterest, and the books floating around about the essentials of what every gal should have in her closet to make her well dressed and classic. I am not here to say those lists are complete rubbish, but in a few ways they are. Those types of lists are so personal to the person writing them. While they may be inspired by some of our favorite timeless fashion and style icons, every gal sees style differently, and not everyone will agree on one style. But I still love the list concept. Making a list always helps me out, and its a great way to assess what you have in your wardrobe, but also where you might have some holes to fill!

So, where do I get off telling everyone I think the lists are rubbish, but that they are still incredibly useful? SAY WHAT?

So I know I kind of made a grand statement up there, and then retracted it. And now I’m even acknowledging what I did?? Well here’s how I go about it. Every 6 months to a year, I take some time, go over what I have in my current wardrobe, and look at what I wear all the time. Write down what I cannot live without. Scratch out items I thought I loved, but don’t really. Add things while thinking “how did I forget that?!” I add accessories, shoes, bags, shirts, pants, skirts, the works. If you can wear it on your body, it is a contender for “the list”.

Once I have this list that has been changed a million times, I set to revising and editing, looking at my own style, how it has grown, where it can still grow. Until recently, a simple black clutch always been high on my list. Just within the last year, Old Navy Flip Flops have been permanently removed from the list. A month ago, gold jewelry was never on there, now I have some beautiful gold color studs that I would be crazy not to include.

What I am really trying to say here, is that style changes.

We as people change. We all dream that we can work in a place where we can rock sky high heels every day, and that they won’t hurt our feet, but that may always be a dream. Evaluate your clothes from the point of view of your current circumstances. Personally, I work in a casual environment, and I am going to invest in those pieces, and not get too hung up on finding the perfect pencil skirt that I will not wear on a regular basis at the moment.

So where does this leave us?

Sit down, grab a piece of paper, and start writing the pieces in your closet you can’t live without. This will help you define your personal style. When you are real and honest about this piece of the puzzle, it makes shopping for clothes so much fun! By having a handle on what you actually wear, and what you need, you cut down on all the extra things you buy.

I took some time and wrote a list from the perspective of my summer wardrobe. What am I wearing and can’t live without? What is just sitting there? And this helped me define what my summer style is. I am still a jeans and t-shirt kind of gal, but with some classic twists, and every once in a while a funky piece thrown into the mix. This includes the recent additions of shirts that I call my “Coachella” inspired shirts.

I have my list in hand, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled– over the next few weeks I am going to be highlighting a few items  as current style favorites! Until then, I hope you write out your own list so we can compare notes! -T
